Cat's Mother of the Month - Suki Pardesi

Another month, another career interview… This time we’re so excited to shine a spotlight on the work of one of our amazing Cat’s Mothers from the North! Suki Pardesi is an artist development specialist; she teaches at RNCM Manchester whilst also running her own business Celebtronic PR, which sees her work across international promotions with artists from all over Europe and the USA. At the start of her career, Suki worked on several media campaigns for legendary artists including David Bowie, Elton John and Rod Stewart, to name a few. Along an exciting career journey, her music industry adventures also landed her in cities from London to LA & New York. She’s now settled in Liverpool - the city steeped in rich musical history.

In this interview Suki shares what she gets up to from day to day, how she broke into this area of the industry and more.

What’s your current role and what does it involve day-day?

Being an Artist Development Specialist on Pop Degree Course at The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) Manchester, I teach music students on how to release and promote their tracks. I also help them learn how to network with industry professionals, get live opportunities and make job applications. After a coffee in the College cafe, I tend to hold 1-1 tutorials with students and run seminars (for example on promotion).

I also have my own business, Celebtronic PR, an International Promotions Consultancy working with artists across Europe and the USA. So about 3 days of my week, I’m networking via Zoom calls. I also dedicate some time to mentoring unsigned talent with various industry organisations (including The CM!)

How did you break into the creative industry - have you always worked in this field?

In my 20's I decided I wanted an exciting job and found myself at a record label through temping. I knew immediately it was for me as I had excellent organisations skills. This opportunity was the beginning of my career as I moved into Promotions, PR and other creative industry roles including Phonogram Films, Senior Press officer at Sky Television, and Phonogram Records. Music PR was my key interest and I found myself working with artists such as David Bowie and Paul McCartney. I took a leap of faith and great courage when I was offered a job in Hollywood, USA working for a music management company. I transferred to New York and found myself in Entertainment PR, then on my return to the UK I found the dream job as an International Promotions Manager at Sony Music. Working with legends and unknowns such as Bob Dylan, Aerosmith, Destiny's Child, Ricky Martin and many more. It was the most incredible experience as I travelled all over Europe arranging their promotional visits.

What female artist has really stood out to you over the years and why?

BJORK and KATE BUSH have been the most exceptional artists I have ever come across. Their creativity, innovative methods musically and visually are outstanding and they have never compromised their art.

Knowing what you know now, what would you tell your younger self?

Never give up on your dream if you have one. Work hard, be tactical, keep an eye on the next move even if you are in a great job, as the industry changes constantly. Be confident in who you are, trust in your skills. Be a team player with integrity and take the time to build relationships. Trust me, in the long run they will be your most valuable assets.

What do you get out of mentoring/networking with up-and-coming talent?

I find it so rewarding to pass on skills, experience and knowledge to benefit other women in getting into the business. Seeing them achieve results after my mentoring fills me with pride! My mantra is "pass it forward" as I have been blessed throughout my career.

What advice would you give to a new artist who’s trying to cut through the noise?

Work damn hard, use every opportunity, open every door. Network by attending open mic sessions, look at funding organisations to support you on your journey and reach out to other artists to collaborate. Be respectful to everyone you meet and take up mentoring opportunities as you never know what magic the mentor can work! Never forget to say thank you via an email.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

The Grand Dame of supporting emerging talent and joining forces with bigger fish to provide more opportunities for unsigned talent!
